“How much should I practice?”
“How much should my child practice? How much should I practice?”
It depends on what your goals are. Are you looking to only strum songs by the campfire? Or are you trying to play a 4 hour bar set, ripping solos till the place shuts down? Those two sides of the spectrum might mean your practicing looks different and requires more/less commitment.
Are you a kid in school with seemingly endless free time? Or are you a busy professional or parent that has a million things on their to-do list every day. These things matter.
Figure out who you are and what your musical goals are. Once that is settled, we can figure out the best plan for you to succeed.
Enough rambling; here’s a more concrete answer.
The Answer:
The perfect amount of practicing is what you can consistently do on a weekly basis.
That’s it. No special, magical answer. Just your ability to be consistent. Progress is stacking small wins over a long period of time. Better to play 15min over 4 days than 1hr over 1 day.
Here’s my recommendation for different age groups. This is the minimum. If you do this, cool! If you do more, great!
12 & under: 15-30min, 4 days a week
13-18: 30min-1hr, 4 days a week
18+: Your life is probably way different than the other categories. Take the previous recommendations and make a decision. 4 days a week is a good place to start.
Well, there’s my answer! Nothing too crazy, I hope.
I hope this was helpful and simplified some things for you. Now go practice!
